Vote for the winner
What a fantastic response! Thank you everyone for participating in and for publicising the Projectwhy short story competition.
Here are all the entries I received. I would really appreciate if you could go through all the stories and vote for your top three. It'd be nice if you could also mention why you like them. Please post your comment on this post. Could you leave your name if you are not a blogger? Thank you.
Each participant gets awarded points for the votes he/she gets. For each no.1, the writer gets three points, for no.2, two points and for each no.3, one point.
At the end of the week, the writer who gets the most points is declared winner and gets a £10 voucher to spend on amazon.com.
Those who come second and third receive a mention. Sponsors for second and third prizes welcome.
A note to the participants - I've tried to link your name to your blog where I know of one. If you'd like it changed, then please do let me know. Thank you.

For all those whose names don't appear doesn't mean stories were not good. I have no choice but to enter only 3 names.:)
1. Tangent
1. Tulsi Keshkamat: Cycle waala - The characterisation is good. A very simple yet strong ending. The story just resonated within me.
2. Chenthil - It was subtle but packed a strong punch all the same. I liked the restraint in it.
3. Aparna: A simple state of being - The story made me smile throughout. That's what being a kid is all about.
Honourable mentions: Varun (different. "russet eyes" was quite something!) and Kay (lovely narration)
1. Ram (The bargain)
2. Tangent (#2)
3. Chenthil
1. Good observation
2. Very cute
3. Touching but true.
1. Chenthil

My rating:
1. Tulsi
2. Ram
3. Varun
I've been in two minds whether or not to vote. In the end, I decided I would. We'll count mine in only if there's a tie, okay?
No.3 - Tulsi's Cycle waala. Though similar to Ram's Bicycle Rider, I liked the metaphor of a black statue and how it serves to rekindle memories of childhood. Very subtle.
No.2 - Chenthil's story. Such feelings of relief are often unacknowledged and frowned upon. While we love our kids, we'd never want to see them suffer or be left to raise a disabled child. Difficult subject, well handled.
No.1 - Tangent's #7. Who hasn't been there, been compared? Such a wonderful statement of the obvious. Loved it.
Chenthil
Ram
Tulsi
1. Tangent - #7 & #6. I agree with Ammani. Short and sweet tales.
2. Kasturi - God.
What I liked were, these were crisp, powerful and well written.
No 3:
Chenthil
No 2:
Tangents #7
No 1:
Tulsi - Cycle Waala
I had posted earlier at the bottom of the page, but to help ammani collect the votes easily... I will repost it here:
Chenthil 2.5 points
Kasturi (God) 2.5 points
Tulsi (Cyclewaala) 1 point.
Great idea, Great participation, Truly great stories.
Sorry to say but the story "Hide and Seek" was copied. I think it was written either by Khushwant Singh or Anita Desai (Dont remember who). The idea is the very same, the author could have at least mentioned that he was inspired by the story.
My choices
1. Varun
2. Bicycle Rider
3. Tangent #1
I will be rating the stories on scale of 3
Kasturi(Nana)= 2.9
Tulsi(Cycle wala)=2.5
Ram (Bargain, Hide and seek,Bicycle Rider)= 2
All Stories are good!!
Hi Anonymous,
I have been told that Anita Desai has written something very close to Hide and Seek...
Infact it was a great surprise that myself and Tulsi (dont know the person at all) came up with similar stories...That was fascinating...I mean Cyclewalla and Bicycle Rider)
I did not intend to copy anything but I have read a lot of books over my life and it is possible that the idea certainly was not original...Must have stayed at the back of my mind...and popped up as if it was something entirely new and original to my mind...
I can withdraw the entry if people so wish.
Ram
First timer here. Ammani..good job on your stories.
These are my ratings
1. Tangent - a few stories made me smile, think and reminisce.
2. Tulsi & Ram - cycle stories - simple. Could vibe with it.
If I may comment, a few stories were very dramatic/cinematic, trying to artifically induce emotions.
Hey Ram (no pun intended! :)),
I agree on the bicycle rider story. Overall, most of us with similar backgrounds function with the same frame of reference and can identify or reminisce about these experiences in similar ways. In the same way, we can come up with intersecting ideas, and they need not be un-original. To be honest, when I read the Hide and Seek story, I could predict it before reading the end... so perhaps we have similar tracks of thinking. There may be others too. It would be unfair to assume that you 'copied' it from somewhere. :) It wouldnt be worth it on a forum like this! -Tulsi
1. tangent #7
2. tulsi-cyclewala
3. kasturi-nana
1. Tangent # 2,5,7
2. Ram
3. Kay
I think it's a little unfair to call Ram's story as plagiarised. Most of us have life experiences from which we draw our stories. And it's very likely that we've all had similar experiences.
This is a case of coincidence. No more.
Tangent
Tulsi
Chenthil
Ammani,
Its great to see you have inspired a whole bunch of quick tale writers!! Way to go!
Almost all the stories were really good..:)
My vote goes to...
1. Tulsi - responsible child
2. Ram - Bicycle rider
3. Ram - bargain.
These were very good in terms of content and originality of style... Some others were good too, but were extremely "Ammani"ish in narration... I'd have mistaken it for u if there was no author name!!:D
Here is my vote
1. A simple state of being -Aparna
2. Hide & Seek - Ram
3. Just a man - Tulsi

1. Kay
2. Varun
3. Tangent # 7
venkat
1. Varun
very well expressed and unexpected ending
2. Kay
Somewhat realistic though we would luv to have our childhood back, we will not want to go through all the thresholds till the state we are now. if given only teh childhood its fine
3. Rams
The bargain was good showing the softer side of a mother
Kay, Kasturi & Mahesh (1, 2 & 3).
My vote goes to
1)Varun - excellent as always.
2)Ram - Hide and Seek.
3) Kay - none will dare to answer 'Yes' to his question :-)

Thank you all.
1. Tulsi "A Responsible Child"

Tulsi's cycle wala comes first for me.
Her responsible child comes a close second
And Kasturi's God comes third
